Touring is celebrating its 90th anniversary with afresh take on the Disco Volante – and Octane has the exclusive first drive. Insolent waves of V8 grumble are surging up the side windows and lapping into the open cockpit and I pause on half-throttle, fingers teasing the upshift paddle. Not yet. Not quite yet; let’s hold those revs for a bit and let the grumble mix with warm wind and glittering Italian sunlight. Then, as the corner unwinds, romp the power, and the waves detonate into full primal scream. And just short of sensory overload, acceleration still squeezing eyeballs ever flatter, I tap the next gear – and lift off completely, for the sheer blood-rush pleasure of the spitting, crackling over-run.

Barchetta

Despite a legacy extending to the original Alfa Disco Volante of 1952, a renowned Touring masterpiece of a different bloodline altogether played an important part in realising the new Disco Spyder. The Spyder’s commissioning buyer also owns the 1950 ex-Gianni Agnelli, ex-Olivier Gendebien Ferrari Tipo 166 MM (left).

brooklands-museum

The right crowd attended Brooklands Museum for one dinner back in February, and the friendly meeting at the bar beforehand – for pints of excellent Hog’s Back local real ale – was only slightly crowded. Any dinner in the historic Brooklands Clubhouse is a special experience, but there was an extra significance because this was the annual gathering of the British Racing Mechanics Club.

Austin-Healey appeal in its purest form? That comes with the four-cylinder 100. There’s something viscerally appealing about an engine with four big cylinders. Once your engine’s capacity is approaching 2.7 litres, accepted rules of engineering politeness suggest that your swept volume should be distributed between six cylinders. Using just four seems uncouth, the route to bigger, fewer, more obvious bangs.
